A note from James Hooke

Welcome to the second issue of Hmail which has already grown in size since our debut. It’s great to see more staff sharing their news.

The month of March has been a busy one for us all. Last weekend saw Sydney switch-off its lights for Earth Hour. A sincere thanks to all staff that worked tirelessly on the project and made Earth Hour a success - the photos in this issue clearly show the level of support the event received from the city of Sydney.

Editorially, our coverage of the State election was first rate. This month’s ‘Insider’ feature with the Herald’s state political editor, gives us a behind-the-scenes look of the team’s election experience. more

Thanks for your support

The Alliance House Committee finalised details of the collection for Cynthia Banham and Morgan Mellish's family. In total, Cynthia and Morgan's work colleagues at Fairfax Media contributed $2740.

Money came spontaneously from individuals at The Sydney Morning Herald, Sun Herald, Good Weekend, Australian Financial Review, BRW, the Newcastle Herald, and even from as far a field as The Lakes Mail, a paper on the central NSW coast. more

SMH’s State Political editor, Anne Davies, discusses the Herald’s coverage of this year’s State election

Story by Erik Jensen, SMH trainee

Of the eight elections Anne Davies has covered, this was not the dullest.

"It was a bit of a strange one, because it felt like the two sides never really engaged. They all just ran their own agendas each day and they didn't seem to intersect," she said.

"It wasn't more difficult [to report]; it just didn't have any sharp focus to it. Every day you'd have to decide who'd done the most interesting thing, and we often found ourselves going to look for stories off the main parties' agendas because, really, they weren't providing us with anything much to report." more
